Travis is put on trial for his "overzealousness" in the line of duty. Blake is feeling guilty about Gan's death, and goes off to an uninhabited planet to think.
Blake has taken Gan's death badly and needs time alone to decide how to go on. He sets a course for the nearest planet with tolerable conditions, then teleports down, scrambling the system's co-ordinates after beaming.

Blake leaves a message for the crew telling them he needs time to think - alone. He's questioning whether his resistance should continue, whether there is too much risk. Both Blake and the crew are on the edge of splitting.

Meanwhile, at the Federation's headquarters, Travis is finally being tried for his war crimes - the death of 1,417 unarmed civilians on the planet Serkasta. Its mainly a show trial. There are some in the Federation who think Servalan is getting too powerful and want to use Travis' failures to embarrass Servalan politically. But in reality, she wants Travis sent down, to hide any mishandling of Blake's pursuit.

Back on the planet, Blake meets a strange alien called Zil; a very jittery creature who is constantly on the move. She encourages Blake to keep moving, to avoid something called The Host. She needs to resist the host saying "Resist it. Oneness must resist the Host". Blake realizes this is also the same for him, resisting the Federation or be swallowed up.

Onboard the Liberator, Avon is busy installing a new detector shield, which can render the Liberator invisible to anything bar close range scanners. The crew then begin to search the planet for Blake as major seismic changes effect the planet. The whole land mass begins to sink beneath the oceans.

Orac discovers that the whole planet is a living life form and the inhabitants are parasites, which the planet is now deciding to kill. The crew struggle to locate Blake, but manage to teleport him up before the planet engulfs him.

Blake outlines his plans to the crew. He feels with their moderate success, they now have a reputation of being invulnerable. But with Gan's death, every Federation officer and bounty hunter will now be looking for them and they must start to rebuild their reputation - starting with an attack on the Federation Headquarters spacestation.

Travis, thinking Servalan is controlling his future, dismisses his defend team, determined to make his own views known. He outlines his training as a field officer, showing how he has to make decisions in the field and that if something went wrong - as on Serkasta - then it is a failing of his training and not of him.

But his defense is to no avail, he's sentenced to be executed for his crimes. As he's about to be taken away, the Liberator attacks, helped by its new detector shield. With the commotion, Travis jumps his guards and escapes - quickly making his way to Servalan. She decides to give him a ship and a crew of Mutiods, so that he can continue to hunt Blake down - still controlled by Servalan.
